On Wednesday November 4th, 2009 Central London was the focus of a memorable event.
Some key members of the Spitfire Society were present as invited guests at the unveiling of a statue of Air Chief Marshall Sir Keith Park in Trafalgar Square.
Present one of our patrons, Wing Commander Peter Ayerst, accompanied by Val Leggett, along with our chairman Squadron Leader Leonard Dickson and his wife Jackie. By coincidence it happened to be his 89th birthday for Peter Ayerst, and he spent most of the day involved in interviews with the press, film and television companies, as did other notable veterans.
These included Wing Commander Tom Neil, Wing Commander Tom Foster, Wing Commander Bob Foster, Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum, Squadron leader Tom Iveson and Flight Lieutenant William Walker.
These veterans had done so much during their service to our country to ensure that a statue of Sir Keith Park had at least been raised in London.
The Central band of the Royal Air Force, the Fanfare team of the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and a small Guard of Honour of the Queen's Colour Squadron were all in place, as a statue was revealed in all its glory, by the members of Sir Keith Park's family.
It was an excellent likeness of the great man.
