The funeral of Wing Commander ‘Bob’ Doe, DSO, DFC & bar, took place on Monday 15th March, 2010 at All Saints Church, Crowborough, East Sussex. Among  the many distinguished mourners and representing the Spitfire Society was Val Leggett.

It was a beautiful and moving service, with very well known hymns; ‘Bob’s’ son Rob gave a very poignant speech all about his father, emphasising how his father and all who fought in the last war were heroes, and if not for the sacrifice that they made, none of us would be here today.

The funeral was attended by members of the RAF and Air Cadets, who lined the pathway leading from the lych gate to the church, all very smartly turned out, setting a shining example to the youth of today.

The funeral service concluded with ‘The Last Post’ played by a trumpeter of the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and then outside the church a heart stopping familiar sound of an approaching merlin engined fighter heralded a flypast by a Spitfire in a final salute against an azure blue sky.
