Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary to be Celebrated with Full Action Airfield Attack and RAF Scramble

Page last updated on Wednesday, August 18, 2010

It was 70 years ago that the ‘Battle of Britain’ took place in the skies above England with a great deal of the action taking place over the South Coast.

For the fifth year the Royal Air Forces Association ‘Battle of Britain Shoreham Airshow’ will bring this scenario again to the skies above Shoreham.

Over 100 veterans have been invited to the airshow as guests of the Shoreham RAFA Branch.

“It is something we look forward to each year and this year will be that little bit special,” said Ivor Lewis Branch Chairman. “We entertain them and make sure they will have a day to remember!”

The airfield will be attacked by two German aircraft a ME108 and an ME109 with ample pyrotechnics to create the air raid.

With look a-like actors – vehicles – anti aircraft guns and replica field operation rooms the Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft will be scrambled taking to the skies over the Sussex Downs and the airfield re-creating the dog fights that took place 70 years ago.

We have received a lot of comments regarding this part of our display and its authenticity making it the highlight of the 6 hour flying.  There will be a total of 6 Spitfires – 4 Hurricanes – 1 ME108 and 1 ME 109 at Shoreham over the weekend – and all will be displaying at set intervals during the day with 8 participating in the airfield attack.

Rachel Huxford, Director of Fund Raising for RAFA said,

“This will be a wonderful tribute to the many who gave their lives during the summer of 1940 and we felt an ideal time to launch the 2010 RAFA Wings Appeal at Shoreham.”

“A lot of planning goes into the running of the airshow and the pilots involved in the scramble under John Romain of ‘The Aircraft Restoration Company’ try to make it as authentic as possible working with the Airshow Display Director Peter Eager,” said John Periam Airshow Press Officer.
