A Letter to Mr Matusiak - The Smolensk Disaster

Page last updated on Thursday, April 22, 2010

The Society has one Polish member - Mr W. Matusiak in Warsaw - amongst the many we have overseas.  The Chairman sent him the following letter as an expression of our sympathy:

Dear Mr Matusiak,

On behalf of the Patrons, Members of the Management Committee and all members of the Spitfire Society , may I send you our deepest condolences for the tragic loss of so many in the terrible accident last week which  struck such a blow to  your country.

A heartfelt sympathy was expressed across our TV, radio and newspapers and I am sure that so much of it stems from memories of the part played by the thousands of Polish people who came to this country at the start of the War and joined in so completely with all the Allied forces.

As an aviation group - now remembering  the 70th year of the Battle of Britain - we are conscious of the part played by the 145 Polish pilots who fought with Nos. 304 and 305 Polish squadrons and with many other Royal Air Force units in that vital campaign.

I would be most grateful if you will convey our feelings to your friends wherever they are and especially those who know of your involvement with our Society.

Yours sincerely,

The Spitfire Society
