Did you know that the men and women of the 'Air Transport Auxiliary' made over 57,000 Spitfire/Seafire ferry flights during World War 2 ?
It was ATA's task to deliver aircraft from factories to Maintenance Units, then onward to RAF and RNAS stations - and then back to MUs when they needed repair and overhaul.
The RAF station at White Waltham was the HQ of the ATA throughout the War and it is intended to establish the only permanent dedicated 'ATA Study Centre & Exhibition' nearby.
An urgent appeal has now gone out for funds to establish this new venture alongside the Maidenhead Heritage Centre; we need to get the display up and running soon as the number of people who are still alive and took part in this historic venture – pilots, ground crew and administrators – is dwindling very quickly. And they hold the key to the authenticity of the museum displays and archive.
'Grandma Flew Spitfires' is based on a very large archive including 45 logbooks of men and women pilots and is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the unique ATA heritage, which has been forgotten for too long.
The project is also intended to enthuse the younger generation about all things in the aviation field and there are going to be plenty of interactive elements - from paper aeroplanes to a Spitfire simulator (funding permitting!).
I would like to thank you for your offer of putting our request on your website and if any of your members would like to make a donation to the work, that would be gratefully received.
Details of the plans can be viewed at http://www.atamuseum.org and you can donate on line at http://www.justgiving.com/grandmaflewspitfires ."
