A model-building competition for young members

Spitfire ModelMany Society members have enjoyed building a model Spitfire; often when we were young and at a formative stage most of us starting with an Airfix kit.

In the process we established a bond with the aircraft and gained an affection for it and detailed knowledge of its detail.

Many of us will have gone on to building flying models and perhaps developed an interest in flying for real; often beginning with the Air Training Corp and gliding.

What a rewarding experience!

But this seldom develops without help and encouragement of adults to provide the early stimulus and to offer continuing opportunities.

The Spitfire Society supports students in higher education and research through our Leonard Stillwell bursaries.

To provide for our growing number of young members and to encourage wider interest we are launching a joint Spitfire Society and Airfix national competition for schools and youth groups.

The competition will be open to schools and youth organisations between the ages of ten and thirteen.

Boxes of fifteen kits of 1/72nd scale Spitfires with all the tools and paints necessary to complete them will be sent to the group organiser.

The competition will be to build either an individual model or a compact diorama and may be an individual or a group entry. Accompanying each entry will be a single A4 page about the Spitfire demonstrating the entrant's interest or scholarship in the subject.

This could, for example, be a piece of creative fiction or a view on any aspect of the aircraft's history – or indeed – its future. Updates will be posted here on the website.

The closing date for the competition is 1st October 2011.

If you as an individual or as a project team from your Roundel would be willing to organise a group in your area please give David Evans a call (01209 831174) or e-mail chairman@spitfiresociety.com for further details.
